It made quite an impression on me at a young age. I’ve shown some of my more advanced English students Taxi Driver, and some of them simply cannot believe that Times Square once really looked like that. I tell them, “Yeah, it totally was” and they’re genuinely shocked.

Remember that once David Letterman’s early stand-by punchlines usually included a reference to “the hookers in Times Square.”
