“sacrifice” and losing a man in a rescue attempt are two different things.
Standing down is unacceptable.
I say that as a former military person with a son in the military, and have heard John McCain echo similar sentiments.
If it were my own son, I would not want the country to back off on his behalf. Choices have been made, and sometimes there are unwanted consequences.

The larger looming issue is a bunch of Thugocracies are watching this very closely to get a measure of the man in the White House.

So far the response appears weak, and the Thugs are taking notes.
