re: #274 Jetpilot1101

Big changes are coming in the military if “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” changes. I’d have no problem sharing a room with an openly gay man (I’m happily married to a lovely woman) but I can tell you that there are folks I work with who would really have a problem with it. There are folks in the military who would have a problem pissing next to an openly gay man at a urinal. It sounds homophobic but unlike other facets of private business where gay people have been making inroads for years, the military has not. Right or wrong, this would be a huge step all at once and it will be a long painful process before all is said an done.

Morning jetpilot.

I’m only speaking as a civilian—a young one—but I’m not sure this will be as disruptive as when the military desegregated. While I’m sure there were plenty of disruptions, to quote the West Wing (the show): “It did disrupt the unit, but you know what? The unit got over it.”

I have a few friends in military (Marines and Navy) and a cousin in the Air Force who have given mixed opinions about that statement. Your thoughts?
