I just realised looking at the GOP Iowa picks from recent years that it’s a guide to who is the craziest teavangelical dirtbag candidate in the field, and nothing more. 2008- Huckabee. 2012- Santorum. 2016 - Cruz. If anything Iowa has become a reliable guide to who won’t be the republican pick. I hate to say it, but I think Trump can take some comfort from that.
