re: #278 lawhawk

And there was a time when Justices were confirmed within days of being nominated. Heck, some were even confirmed on voice vote.

The process has evolved over time. But what the GOP is proposing doing here is breathtaking in its audacity. They want to deny the President the opportunity to even nominate someone.

If the GOP wants to block the confirmation of someone obviously qualified for the Court, that’s on the GOP, and it will haunt them into November. Because you know that the GOP would scream bloody hell if the Democrats tried pulling this stunt.

And no, Bork wasn’t an equivalent situation. Bork got his hearings - Reagan should have withdrawn him after the Judiciary Committee found him wanting. Yet, Bork/Reagan wanted the full Senate to vote. That prolonged his confirmation, which also voted against confirming.

Yet Reagan came back and nominated Kennedy, who was easily confirmed. Funny how that works.

The GOP doesn’t even care about qualifications of Obama’s nominee. They’re opposing on sheer spite.

And for that the GOP deserves to lose the Senate. Democrats better use all these sound clips/statements in every election ad going forward.

Heh, In my 20 minutes of Morning Joke opening in the morning to get a feel for today’s talking points Joke Scarborough was moaning about the absolutely horrible way one Robert Bork was treated when he was a nominee.

Yeah, right Joke.
