To elaborate: I never did heroin because of Keith Richards, but I was among many impressionable idiots who thought it was ok to get wasted when performing. Thankfully our drummer thought otherwise and wasn’t afraid to throw his sticks. Still, it took me awhile to realize the bullshit of that image that Keith and other rock performers presented when I was 13, 14—I mean that I didn’t realize it until I was in my late teens. I didn’t go to college so much to get smarter; I went to leave the dream of playing in a band and to save myself.

I’ve been around a lot of local type bands and a decent regional band and for a good part of them it never got into anything really heavy, and never before playing. At the most someone might smoke a joint…maybe a beer or two. Thankfully.
