If I recall the novel correctly, Blacks were in detention centers and thus weren’t really part of the story. I thought the novel was very sad so I’m not tempted to watch the series although I’ve read glowing reviews.

In the novel, Giliead was a white supremacist authoritarian state but the Hulu series completely ignores the racism angle, even including a few WOC as Handmaids and showing June in an interracial relationship.

I watched season 1 in tandem with episodes of Underground (which was cancelled) and it struck me how similar they were.
