The electoral college is actually cancelling votes everywhere. If you’re a Democrat in Wyoming or Utah, there’s no point in you voting for president, because what difference does it make if the Democrat loses 60-40 or 55-45? If you’re a Republican in California or New York, it’s the same scenario.

If it’s a popular vote, then Democrats closing the gap in Wyoming and Utah matters. Same with Republicans in California or New York. In fact, this might actually be more beneficial to Republicans because there are more lost votes in big states than there are in smaller states.

The EC is the ultimate in gerrymandering. Obviously, the Republican objections are solely because they believe they will be consigned to a permanent minority status if they have to win a majority of the popular vote. So they adopt any position or argument that guarantees them control of the government.
