That’s a bit of misleading language. He wasn’t within his rights to just kill the thief, only to kill under the circumstances prescribed by the law:

I’m not sure that it was misleading - but adding more specificity is always a good thing to do.

The point is that this killing was not a criminal offense under SYG, whereas under other standards previously in place, it would have been.
