That goes several ways, for a gun is ultimately just a tool. We can use to protect ourselves sometimes, or it can be used by those with evil intentions. What ever else is true, the weapon matters less than the mind behind it.
And in order to protect yourself with a weapon, you need to be trained in its use and have steady nerves.
In order to protect others, you need, expert training, skill, experience, sound nerves and even more sound judgement.
That is a hard set of skills to acquire, and they would not come cheap if we set out to hire people who have mastered them on a massive scale.
