I have a feeling that if the Iranian “payoff” flap had been about any country other than Iran, the story would have died in a day or so, if it had had any “legs” to begin with. However, Iran is still the Axis Of Evil/ Designated Boogeyman for a lot of folks in government (like grandstanding Senators), so anything they can whip up about Scary Muslims - however much of a nothingburger - is going to get milked for maximum effect.

I still think the best thing for the Administration to do would be to point out that the Iran payment was in fulfillment of the terms of a negotiated contract: and how much that contrasts with Donald Trump’s approach to business..
