History is crystal fucking clear, so they have to come up with some bullshit. Note that the same people who will give you that line about how it wasn’t about slavery because Lincoln said if he could bring the Union back together without freeing the slaves he would will also tell you that line about Lincoln needing an excuse that wasn’t just taxes so he blamed it on slavery.

It’s all bullshit, and they believe it without it making sense because they can’t accept the idea that great-grandpappy went to war to preserve and extend chattel slavery, the worst cause for which American soldiers ever took up arms.
