Plus some idiot in the loop making executive decisions. I’m sure it would have be infinitely cheaper for United to have just taken the hit from their people not being where they were supposed to be than to deal with this legal and PR disaster.

If their people needed to be somewhere, United should provide an alternate mechanism other than waiting on standby. To me, “employee standby” is for employees who are wanting to take a flight somewhere as a perk, and should be lowest priority. If they are being transported as part of business operations to get them in position for a future run, that’s not standby.
