That ravine does seems peculiar. I also have not delved into the fansites to learn why Iowa has a big canyon. Either the film makers know nothing about Iowa, or it’s some subtle reference to a cataclysm of the past.

That’s why I thought it was a call back to the Enterprise series. Since that series dealt with a time-war it already opened up the idea of alternate timelines, and of course the re-boot films went full in on this idea.
