This is a rather unfair comparison, PT-109 was fogbound with zero visibility running silent during wartime without radar. An Arleigh Burke destroyer like the Fitzgerald can track over 100 targets simultaneously and engage them over the horizon, for it to get hit by a cargo tanker during normal peacetime operations is just barely less pathetic than running aground.

However in the Straits of Hormuz, would they be running their radar systems like that? I don’t know either the Navy’s protocols or shipping protocols for that. Plus, they would be right next to Iran, where they might not want to give up signals intelligence to the Iranians.

Hence, the idea the Navy will look at all this.
