Isn’t one of the issues now that the Panama Canal can’t accommodate some of the larger shipping vessels? Also, I’m just going to go out on a limb and guess that Trump’s approach (for lack of a better word) to foreign policy is just word association.

“That’s the one with the canal, right?”
“Um, yes, sir.”
“Good, got it, ok, what’s next?”
“Sir, there’s 20 things on the list of issues to discuss with Panama.”
“Yeah, they’ve got the canal, we built it, right? Good, yeah, what’s next? Oh, wait, do we have any hotels there?”

Are you sure that before today he knew there was a canal and that we built it? Sounds like a statement that someone briefed him on a few minutes before his meeting.
