I still have severe doubts that it’s as simple as “asked a staffer.” Considering the shit that other Republicans are being allowed to slide on, querying a staffer about possibly being a surrogate seems way too tame to be “I must suddenly spend more time with my family” worthy.

However pure a person’s intentions are they simply can’t ever ask one of their employees something like that without the employee inferring that their answer might have consequences for their career. It is sexual (ie reproductive) harassment deconstructed into the coldest and most clinical terms. The fact that he wouldn’t have derived pleasure through direct interpersonal contact doesn’t really change anything important.
