I once looked at the sun through a welders helmet, and saw something very similar to the photo below. The sun was a perfectly round orange coin, and there was a black dot in front if it. I always wondered if I was seeing the silhouette of a planet.

I don’t see any planet it could have been during the timeframe, so maybe a huge sunspot.
