There was a time when Common Law prevailed in among other places, England. IIRC, the basics with Saxon Law and other European laws were similar in the responsibility of Male Citizens.

They were to come, immediately to the rescue of a women being raped.

Now, a days, the ones screaming to return to our roots are the ones sanctioning rape.

ah well, I forget. Women weren’t people then. These men were actually coming to protect the asset of another man. His right to secure his seed for posterity.
