He was fortunate to face a series of incompetent Union Generals until Lincoln finally put Grant in charge. Not Lincoln’s fault; he couldn’t know the mettle of the men he appointed until they actually had to lead men in combat, and Grant had to prove himself worthy after the way he was drummed out of the military.
