We’ve put so many of our eggs into the housing bubble that its demise has created the steep decline in GDP.

Instead of encouraging a society that makes sense and works together, and god help us, lives in something approaching density, we encouraged people to buy homes they couldn’t afford, as investment vehicles that weren’t remotely stable, using mystifying and bizarre loan structures that weren’t easily understood, sold to those people by mortgage brokers who had no interest in their ability to repay, to further isolate themselves in suburbs that are increasingly difficult to maintain, difficult to drive to, and which have water, power and resource requirements that are unsustainable in the long term.
