I’m trying really hard not to be offended.

I hadn’t realized how little most people care for, or even notice the physically disabled. Bus drivers who snarl at the extra minute it takes for her to get on and belted in. Passengers that roll their eyes at being asked to move. People that swear at her because she ran over their foot despite being asked three times loudly to remove said foot from the aisle of the subway car.

Most places labelled ‘handicapped accessible’ are not. They might have a ramp to get in the door but the door opens outward which makes it difficult to use said ramp. The washrooms are on other floors with no elevator.

The first time my wife came to visit the customs agent that dealt with her spent a half hour ranting at my wife because my wife was “coming to leech off of honest Canadians.” I couldn’t get my wife to leave the apartment for days after because she was worried she’d be arrested and sent back to the US, never to be allowed to return.

I see no reason why working would be any different.

Despite all our society’s words about inclusiveness and diversity there is actually far less of it than we believe.
