“Undiscovered Country” had a pretty significant problems (though it’s still my second-favorite Trek movie) but they did so right by Sulu.

Undiscovered Country laid the end-of-the-Cold-War allegory on thick and deep, but the cast’s performances (even Shatner’s) was pretty damn good. For me, Sulu as captain of the Excelsior, as well as Plummer, Cattrall, Iman, David Warner, and Kurtwood Smith’s performances (as well as Michael Dorn’s cameo as a lawyer ancestor of his TNG/DS9 character Worf, tasked with Kirk and McCoy’s defense in Klingon court) made the movie much better than its immediate predecessor in the series.
