The problem is, it is undeniably more secure to use 2FA. That makes this an especially insidious ploy, because by doing this, now a whole bunch of people are going to disable 2FA (or not enable it in the first place), leaving them vulnerable to password cracks/database leaks.
I never used 2FA at Facebook precisely because I didn’t trust them enough to give them my phone number. And I was right to distrust them.
