Please stop casting this in terms of strategy, there is none. He’s a blind, cornered, wounded animal just lashing out, incapable of admitting error or retreating from a position once he’s taken it. All he knows is how to double down on attacking what he fears.

No, I do think it is a strategy of a sort. He has always been a sadist and he likes shoving this sort of thing into other people’s faces…like his affairs being on NY tabloids etc. Also, it is a hallmark of authoritarianism to flaunt power over the impotence of the people and remind them of their place.
