I wanted to share this earlier. I’m still watching the TVTropes conversation from earlier. However, someone from Toronto had an interesting comment and story:

(From Someone Else)
Correction, some customs are incompatible with progress, including formerly Canadian ones like the residential schools for natives. Cultures change over time, and it (hopefully) doesn’t take outside influence to realize that some things are wrong. For example, I don’t see the mistreatment of women as any more acceptable in Saudi Arabia than it would be in Canada.

So spousal abuse and honour killings are progressive?

It’s interesting: there was a case of a Muslim father killing his daughter because she wore a hijab (or some form of it).

Radical, it’s a lot easier to say to do away with nationality when you travel a lot

The bolded is a major inversion of the stereotype spread by Geller and others. Apparently, this story caused waves locally.
