$50 in 1966 (she graduated in 1970, so I’m using 1966 as her freshman year) translates to about $400 today. So, $800 per year. That’s about half what I was paying in 1998/1999 at Long Beach State. Now it’s just short of $7,00 per year.

Pretty hard to pay that out of pocket if you’re working 20 hours a week at $15/hour and to be able to afford the other essentials of life.

My parents, both public school teachers, put three kids through college. Two in the first half of the 1980s and a third in the early 1990s. They could because tuition was affordable at state schools, not because public school teachers were ever well paid.
