Personally, I think everyone involved had his brain cooked and behaved abominably.

Again, taking a swing at someone in response to verbal abuse is flat out wrong.

I worked in retail for many years, and occasionally had customers go off on me or other employees. My response, and the response I taught everyone to master, was to stand there calmly with your hands behind your back and do nothing. If things escalated to threats, point out quietly that you’ll make absolutely certain the threatener will be going to jail if they decide to act on them. Finally, of course, get a manager involved. But pointing out that someone was on the verge of crossing the line from ranting to pummeling, and the consequences that would follow if they did, was always enough to calm things down.

I’m not excusing anyone’s behavior here. But Frodo threw the first punch, and he wasn’t justified in doing so.
