True..I think there is enough emotional depth there that it could have been a really good movie, though not accepted by the same audience.

It’s a very good coming of age story set against an interstellar war. With a big dollop of Heinlein’s “how about this!” political stuff mixed in.

He wrote very readable stories. The prose flows, the action keeps up, and the side commentary is not dominating (YMMV at what point the Brain Eater got him). Compare that to some of the info-dump happy military sci-fi that came after it and you want to cry. Though there is still interesting stuff out there.
