Old man rant: Why in hell are so many of my fellow seniors so fearful? They seem to be afraid of their own shadows most of the time. Fox News leads them around by a ring in their noses, to be sure, but they have to be susceptible in the first place. They flatly refuse to believe, for example, that we are bombing Daesh every single fucking day or that the crime rate here at home is barely half what it was in 1980. Relax, people, it isn’t nearly as scary as it was when we were young: hundreds of dead a week in Vietnam; brutal, out of control cops everywhere; hair-trigger nuclear standoff with the Soviets; large blocs of the population not allowed to vote. It must be some secret brain rotting chemical in Geritol (which I don’t use) or subliminal crazy messages in Bonanza re-runs (which I don’t watch).

Some people want to be scared, Shiplord.

And when they find a source that will scare them like they want to be scared (enter Fox News), they tune out everything else - any resource that could put their minds at ease becomes suspect, because they got their scared on and any facts to the contrary are just trying to lull them into a false sense of security.

I’m starting to believe that for some people, fear is a drug far superior in its rush to heroin or cocaine or meth or crack or anything. Because people who become hooked on it never, ever want to give it up.
