He had a really bad habit of telling a subordinate very vaguely what he wanted done. This bit his ass several times at Gettysburg.
Gettysburg is a classic example of how he wasn’t that great - he got out generaled by Buford & Meade and ignored his best general’s advice - that of Longstreet.
