The GOP ceased any moral authority on Civil Rights when they nominated Goldwater- an opponent of the CRA 1964 for President and it’s been downhill ever since.

And Goldwater was only nominated through the ceaseless work of a textile magnate named Milliken, who used racists to drum up support for Goldwater. That GOP convention was one of the most contentious in history, pitting the powerful Rockefeller wing against Milliken and his new social conservative wing. Milliken spent insane amounts of money in a Sixties election to ensure Goldwater was the nominee.
