Flood insurance is one of those things you hope never to need, but it’s required if you’re anywhere in a flood map hazard area.

It’s also a good idea most everywhere else given that flash floods can occur anywhere, including in mountainous areas or away from rivers or coastlines. But you aren’t required to have flood insurance in those areas so most people don’t bother with the flood insurance since they do the cost/benefit analysis over a 1 in 100 year flood rebuild versus the annual flood insurance costs.

Around here, I’m outside a flood zone, and don’t pay for flood insurance. But a mile away, they’re required to because they’re in the Passaic River flood zone (especially after Floyd, Irene, and Sandy).
