We should have dealt with them such that they would look at how the English treated the Highlanders and begged for that much mercy. At the minimum, Lee should have been frog marched to the nearest oak tree from the surrender to hang and his army forced to do a legionary decimation.

I think the problem suffers from too much hindsight. General Grant and President Lincoln, thinking leniency would preserve the Union by allowing the South to retain their honor and tradition while removing the problematic parts, greatly underestimated the resolve of the racist asshats to do everything they could to stay racist asshats as long as possible.
