Takes me back to Usenet groups. Anyone else remember those? Most were completely unmoderated, so death threats and insane rants checkered the threads about finding a pediatrician or discussing the latest Harry Potter book.

I certainly grew a very thick skin, but I prefer moderated sites to picking through that crap.

Though sometimes the more interesting discussions were on the unmoderated versions of groups that covered the same subject as a moderated group. US Civil War for instance. Though alt.war.civil.usa was also a major source for flame wars and all sort of ranty discourse.
