Yeah, thatâs kinda where Iâm at. Itâs weird to think how many phrases we adopt that have underlying sexist/racist tones that we just donât think about.
For instance, âheâ in certain circumstances, or even âshe.â Iâd been friends with lots of gay men and women for many years and thought myself oh so liberated as a straight guy until I started working with a trans person who wished to be referred to as âthey.â I was taken aback but I got over it.
In the present case, itâs all about what language they use. Do they call themselves âMAGA girlsâ? It wouldnât surprise me. But if not, we shouldnât. And âcatfightâ is probably one to be avoided nowadays, along with âblack humorâ and various other expressions that have previously been regarded as acceptable if not normal. Shakespeare and Chaucer have permanent permission to carry on, but quoting them can occasionally get problematic; and very funny.
