It depends on what level y’all can play at. For classical compositions, you’d need all 88 keys. For most pop music, 61 would be fine. 44 keys would be for the rank beginner and your girl would probably outgrow it pretty quickly. Lighted keyboards show which keys should be pressed — good for learning tunes straight out of the box.

Oh, I’m not one of those who think things should be easy. No lighted keyboards for her! Yeah, I think just going with the straight 88 keys would be the best. After all, I want to learn as well and, to me, a keyboard with fewer keys would be like trying to learn to play a saxophone on a recorder.
