Long-term lockdowns are probably not going to work in Western societies, no matter how well-intentioned they are. Individual freedoms and civil liberties are simply too deeply-ingrained into the Western world, especially the idea of individualism. It may work to a greater extent in societies where the cultural focus is more collectivist.

The idea, I think, is to break the chain of transmissions with this drastic step. After that, we can go to less rigorous measures. If the average transmission rate is one per infected person, instead of the 2.6 - 3 we’ve been seeing, we have a situation our medical infrastructure can handle.
