My point is that there’s a whole range of relative power relationships from the one you described originally to being two people at the same level in different departments, and that makes drawing the bright lines difficult. Add to this that attraction is rarely as logical and rational as the above suggests.

This is why people need to be better trained by employers to think with their big brains about this issue. There are a lot of people out there you could be attracted to, so try to focus on the ones who aren’t in your chain-of-command. Of course if a company is serious about stamping out sexual harassment, it has to be willing to take action against company stars who think the rules don’t apply to them.
