In 2010 it is completely possible for the US to win the war in Afghanistan in less than an hour and keep the Taliban and terrorists from ever using the place as a base of operations again for the foreseeable future… The method however is unthinkable to all but the most rabid nutbars.

Without some radical outside the box thinking by strategists or the above nightmare scenario you are likely correct in your assumption, but to say it is impossible implies an absolute that is easily proven false.
