A friend of mine form high school has started sending me cassette tapes he mostly recorded of the radio in Northern NJ in the mid to late 70’s. We grew up in a suburb of NYC, perfectly located to grab the radio signals form Long Island, Northern NJ and NYC. WLIR, WNEW, WNYU, WFMU, Fordham’s radio station, Rutger’s etc etc. Steve spend many a night with his cassette deck capturing David Bromberg, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Cliff, Gil Scott-Heron, Ricky Ford and other NY young lions of hard bop and a shit load of soon to be legendary as well as soon to be forgotten players who spilled through the NYC area in the 70’s. When I left Jersey in 1977, he had at least 2 dresser drawers full of cassette tapes. He just started sending me tapes to dump to digital and master using my high end A/D convertors.

Tonight I had the pleasure of a six pack of Mt. Carmel Amber Ale and listening to Sea Level live from My Fathers Place, a somewhat legendary club on Long Island. Sounds like a radio tape due to the compression, so it was probably broadcast over WLIR. If you’ve never heard of Sea Level, they were a band formed after the first break up of the Allman Brothers about 1976. Featuring Chuck Leavelle, Jaimoe and Lamar Williams of the Allman’s and guitarist Jimmy Nalls, this version also had the incredible Randall Bramblett on sax and Davis Causey on guitar. Sea Level fused southern soul, rock and jazz with incomparable musicianship. This tape is un-fucking-real.
