Because they won’t get the turnout they need. Just look at mid-term elections. Without a presidential candidate who will get people to go to the polls it becomes an uphill battle.
Those that are not standing for re-election would/will be kneecapping their colleagues that are. That’s a tough ragged edge on an action that needs to present a united front.
I think an elder statesman like McCain could have bridged that gap if he had any balls, but he mortgaged those an awful long time ago.
