I really do not know how much of it is about a true sense of political conviction and how much of it is perverse glee in offending people and goading a reaction out of them.

I’m certain that the various völkisch groups in Germany loved needling the Social Democrats with their furious invective just because its blatant idiocy aroused the ire of the establishment.
People might have tuned in just to see Weimar squirm. And then one day it was all undone and all the trolling had to be enshrined by the new government.
Since we all know that conservative humour is just a veneer for hatred, I guess the transition was a smooth one.
