re: #310 Alephnaught

That happened one time to me when I got “Victorialand” by Cocteau Twins. It’s an LP, but it’s a mini-LP, so the vinyl version plays at 45rpm rather than the usual 33.

As the opening track was a slow, almost ambient, number, it took me a couple of minutes to realise I was actually playing it at the wrong speed.

Unusual formats like this were quite common on UK Indie record labels at the time, so the UK’s most famous radio Indie DJ, John Peel, would often get it wrong too, the same way I did, often on air. Famously, when this happened, he would say something to effect that he preferred it at that speed.

I used to listen to a “progressive” rock station in the early 70’s before it was taken over and formatted. One afternoon they were playing some long drawn out Black Sabbath song and the DJ got bored with it, so he flipped the turntable up to 45 rpm to finish the song. It was exactly what was needed.
