re: #311 Barefoot Grin
Must be interesting family reunions. I come from a large farming family with regular reunions. When I was a kid, with the exception of a couple of in-laws, almost everyone was a New Deal democrat (my parents and that generation came of age in the Great Depression).
At the last reunion last summer I got into “conversations” with cousins who hold that states should set laws so as to attract those whose beliefs most accord with each state. And these are doctors and mergers/aquisition guys. Ain’t no accountin’.
The old “laboratories of democracy” argument. Unfortunately, we’ve seen too many states turn into meth labs of democracy.
The counter argument to that is fairly simple: that’s mostly what we do. But we have a baseline of what is and isn’t allowed - it’s called the constitution, and some of the stuff, like due process and equal protection is so important we put it in there twice.
