Gulf Oil Spill update:

They will no longer try the junk shot next should the top kill with mud fail. Instead, they plan to cut off the riser from the lower marine riser package (LMRP) and attach another dome to capture the oil and gas leaking out. This because the junk shot could cut off other control options (such as the choke and kill lines)

Should this fail, next comes the option Austin_Blue was talking about, “hot stabbing” another BOP on top of the malfunctioning one, or a valve, and then trying to close off the leak ala Red Adair.

This because they believe the well is not free flowing, rather it is constrained by debris and also because of the type blowout.

Today BP announced the flow is not traveling up the main well bore. They believe the mostly likely flow path is between two casing strings. In addition, some obstructions such as cement and rocks are restricting the flow rate. This is based on low pressure readings on the lower part of the BOP stack.

This would indicate why they believe the top kill with mud could work. The pressure is below a free flow.
