Even in non-royal bloodlines cousin marriage can wreak havoc, like there are hereditary disorders more or less common to Finland, caused by the distances between populations until modern transportation came along.
Personally, I’d prefer 7 degrees of separation precisely to prevent crap building up in the gene pool.

Nothing scarrier than an inbred human —IMHO.

This counts for culture as well as genetics.
