I recall a question on an Army test for prospective infantry squad leaders that asked “do you give the M-60G to that new hot shot who might be a really good Gunner or does it go that Assistant MG that has shown himself to be steady?”
The answer they wanted was “go with the proven steady guy”.
Now this was Doctrine from the people who thought that the highest Duty was to the Mission.
