On August 7, at around 10 a.m., four black high school students were held at gun point, face down on the ground, by a middle-aged white woman. The four kids were high school football players, fundraising for their school’s football team, a week or so before school begins for the Wynne School system in Wynne, Arkansas. Memphis’ WMC5 News reports that at least two of the teens were wearing their football jerseys when 46-year old Jerri Kelly, decided the four looked suspicious enough to pull a gun on.

According to Wynne Police Chief Jackie Clark “suspicious persons,” were reported to emergency services and when police arrived, Mrs. Kelly was holding the four teens at gunpoint while they sat on the ground. Kelly was arrested on “four counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a minor.”

A neighbor told news outlets that high school kids go door to door every year around this time of year, fundraising for the football team. It isn’t a new phenomenon. Surprisingly, Mrs. Kelly did not get her mugshot taken. When asked if Kelly, who is married to Cross County Jail Administrator Joe Kelly had received “special treatment,” in not getting her mugshot taken, Police Chief Clark dismissed the question saying that Kelly had had a “medical issue” during her booking.

On Thursday morning, before her court appearance, Kelly had her mugshot taken, “because of community backlash.” The authorities have been saying everything one needs to say if you want to exonerate someone who seems to be terribly guilty of “four counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a minor.” This includes Wynne Police Chief Jackie Clark insisting on focusing on the students and not wanting to answer questions about Kelly.

The Wynne School System Superintendent said that they were considering ending door-to-door fundraising. Yeah, kids walking around and talking to neighbors is the problem. Not the people with the guns.
