Joe Leavey, a FDNY lieutenant who was off-duty on the morning of 9/11, was a neighbor of mine. He jumped in his car, and raced to his firehouse, which was in the South Street Seaport area close to Ground Zero. His last radio transmission was captured for posterity. He was leading his men up the stairs to the Sky Lobby in the WTC to treat and rescue the people who had been wounded by flying glass, and were bleeding to death.

The building came down on him and his men. We’ll never forget.

Thank you for sharing that. Our friend was the co-pilot on the second plane to hit the towers. We attended the funeral without a body, and with military security like you can’t believe, including air security.
